ADHD Medication Management
On the 1st December 2025 the Queensland rules changed to allow GPs to diagnose and medically manage ADHD. As I have been managing ADHD and neurodiversity for over 20 years, I had to close my books due to the unprecedented demand on my services which was encroaching on my regular General Practice work.
However I will temporarily be opening my books for patients who are not from our practice but this will be on limited days in the month and not during my regular consulting days.
My aim is to provide an efficient service that stabilises medical management without unnecessary extra appointments if the diagnosis and treatment is straightforward.
The Aim Of The Service
The aim of this service is to diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication if the patient is suited. But once stabilised I would expect the patient to return to their own GP for ongoing prescriptions.
Patients who are NOT eligible for this service
If you have the any of the following conditions then you are not eligible for this service and you are best having your GP refer you to a psychiatrist
-
Epilepsy
-
Schizophrenia
-
Coronary artery disease

Active Anorexia
-
Bipolar disorder
-

What to expect on the day
The initial appointment will be 45 minutes. This will include taking a history and perfoming an ECG and deciding on medication management if indicated.
It is important to know that in some cases ADHD is not the correct diagnosis and medication will not be prescribed. Or medication may not be needed. Or a medical problem such as high blood pressure or an arrythmia may contraindicate medication.
It is essential that you do not have an expectation to be prescribed medication. The consultation is my assessment and management recommendations which very occasionally do not include medications.
If your assessment is confirmed and you have met the medical criteria for safe prescribing, then you will be given a trial prescription on the day and a follow up will be planned for 3 to 4 weeks later.
Further follow up will depend on your response to medications.
Follow up appointments will only be conducted on certain days outside my normal general practice days so you will need to be flexible to fit into those days’ appointments.
AI transcription software
I use software that records to an AI scribe to write the notes and generate letters to patients and doctors. As per the privacy laws, on accepting my appointment you must fill the consent form to allow me to use this tool. This is not negotiable and if you do not consent to my using AI transcription software then I cannot engage you as a patient as it is onerous for me to type your notes.
What is essential to do beforehand
You need to go to your GP and request blood tests that are no older than 6 months prior to the consultation.
These will need to include FBC, E/LFTs, TSH, iron studies, B12, folate.
If you have had these done then you need to bring me in a copy.
If you are over 50 or over 40 and very unhealthy especially with poorly managed diabetes, then you will need to provide me with a CT calcium score or cardiac testing that is no older than 12 months.
This is to exclude cardiac concerns with ADHD medications.
If you have not done these with your GP and I have to organise these tests then it will delay the diagnosis and medical management at further cost to you as you will need other appointments which will only be on limited days.
You will need to bring in a full list of your medications including medical cannibis if you are using it.
You will need to provide me with a full medical history.
If you have previously tried ADHD medications this also helps me to know which one worked for you.
If you have had a formal diagnosis or psychologist testing in the past please bring this with you.
The Process
Prescribing medications involves me logging your details with a government website called Qscript to check your prior prescriptions.
Most of the common medications such as Dexamphetamine, Vyvanse and Ritalin require me to call the authority prescription line to gain authority to prescribe for you.
The prescription will be sent to your phone as an escript.
A consultation summary will be forwarded to you by email.
Once you are stabilised a letter will be sent back to your GP with instructions on how to prescribe for you in the future.
Special situations
Children
I am happy to consult with parents about children with ADHD, but the process is generally more complicated and often will need referrals to other therapists or doctors and will often need several prolonged consultations.
It is best that you consider the initial appointment as a fact-finding appointment and it is best to book for a 1 hour session.
I find it best for the parents to come in without the child for the first appointment to allow the adults to speak candidly. I also expect both parents to be present.
Autism
If you have Autism and ADHD it would be best to book 1 hour as sometimes treating ADHD can make autistic traits more prevalent, so this needs more explaining. I cannot guarantee that I can manage your Autism, but I can guide you on what you need, and I can help you with managing your ADHD.
OCD
If you have OCD and ADHD it would be best to book 1 hour as sometimes treating ADHD can make autistic traits more prevalent, so this needs more explaining.
I look forward to meeting you
